A Haveli Reborn

Tucked away in Nawalgarh, the crown jewel of Rajasthan's famed Shekhawati region, often called India's “Open Art Gallery”, lies a haveli that has found new life as the Vivaana Museum Hotel.

Once a grand Jaipuria mansion, it has been lovingly restored under the vision of conservationist and entrepreneur Atul Khanna. Today, it stands as a shining example of how heritage can be preserved and reimagined, blending centuries-old frescoes and intricate architecture with the warmth and comfort of contemporary hospitality.

The story of this haveli begins in the heart of Shekhawati, a land once home to the legendary Marwari traders whose fortunes built some of Rajasthan's most magnificent mansions. Designed in the classic Marwari style, this haveli wears its heritage with quiet pride. It is opulent yet soulful, artistic yet deeply rooted in its culture. Its walls, courtyards, and ceilings are alive with frescoes painted over a century ago — vivid scenes from Hindu mythology, echoes of colonial influence, glimpses of folklore, and slices of everyday life. Created with natural pigments by local artisans, these intricate murals capture the cosmopolitan spirit of the Marwari Seths who once called it home. “Every fresco tells a story, and here, those stories are still very much alive,” says Mr. Khanna.
