Adam Grant on How to Build a Great Workplace in an Age of Mega-Threats
Inc.
|Summer 2025
The organizational psychologist has a keen perspective on how to foster a sense of community at work.
If this era has one sage or guru knowledgeable in all matters of the workplace, an expert with a high-altitude perspective on the many cultural, social, and political issues that routinely converge on white-collar America, it is probably Adam Grant. The organizational psychologist is a professor at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and a best-selling author known for uncovering the keys to great leadership, teamwork, and employee engagement.
His insight might be more necessary than ever. A cultural reckoning is taking root in America as Gen-Z enters the workforce, the White House tries to force companies to scrap diversity, equity, and inclusion programs, and leaders across industries demand employees return to their desks five days a week. We caught up with Grant to discuss these topics and more, including how to make employees feel valued at work.
What makes a great workplace in 2025, and does it change over time?
Every generation basically wants the same thing: They want interesting, meaningful, challenging work that helps them grow and advance. They want to be able to support themselves, their families, and their life-styles. They want to do work that makes a meaningful contribution to others' lives, and they want to have a sense of community at work and a decent life outside of work.
Can you name a company you think does a good job in this regard?
