As weddings evolve, hotels are blending technology, imagination, and authenticity to shape meaningful celebrations.

If one were to capture Indian weddings in a single word, one would probably go with words like 'grand', 'vibrant' and 'jamboree'. While each of these conveys a dimension of our celebrations, big fat Indian weddings are becoming synonymous with 'adaptive' as millennials and GenZ couples have started to prioritise personal choices as much as scale, spectacle, and extravaganza.

Across the hospitality sector, this shift is rewriting how hotels approach event planning, too. In the experience economy, hotels are no longer just venues, but co-creators of unique experiences, blending culinary artistry, design sensibility, and technological innovation.

To bring a host's vision to life, hotels today are increasingly involving their teams in executing micro-details, from the precise texture of ceremonial materials to the perfect alignment of décor, ensuring that the emotional tone of each event resonates long after the wedding ends. Not only this, but there is also a growing trend of integrating pets, family-specific rituals, and personalised storytelling into weddings to create deeply personal experiences.

imageAs per recent reports, India's wedding economy is now valued at nearly $130 billion (10 lakh crore), making it the country's second-largest consumer-spending category after food and grocery. Average spending per wedding has risen 14% year-on-year to ₹32 lakh - ₹35 lakh, reflecting the shift toward experiential, bespoke celebrations.

For hotels, this growth isn't just about higher occupancy rates or event bookings, but an opportunity to move up the value chain by curating distinctive, high-touch experiences that extend beyond the celebration itself.

Thus, short-term gain brings long-term pain, says Dominic CostaBir while suggesting a three-point strategy to...
