The long-standing tension between India and Pakistan erupted into open conflict in 2025, following a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. While both countries have experienced multiple flashpoints since their partition in 1947, the events of April-May 2025 marked one of the most serious confrontations in recent years, pushing both nuclear-armed neighbors dangerously close to full-scale war.

The Spark Pahalgam Attack (April 22, 2025)

The immediate trigger for the conflict was a brutal terror attack in Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22. Five heavily armed militants opened fire on Hindu pilgrims and tourists, killing 26 people and injuring dozens more. The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be a proxy of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, initially claimed responsibility but later denied involvement.

India held Pakistan responsible for harboring and supporting terrorist groups operating in Kashmir. Pakistan, in turn, denied any involvement and called for a joint investigation. The Indian government, however, was firm in its response, labeling the attack as a “state-sponsored act of terror.”

Diplomatic Fallout and Treaty Suspension

Within days, India suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, a historic agreement brokered by the World Bank in 1960 that governed the sharing of river waters between the two nations. India blocked portions of the Chenab River's flow, signaling its willingness to use water as a strategic tool.
