The continent's higher education sector may need to prove its relevance in economies reshaped by technology, inequality, and rapid population growth.

Universities Under Pressure As Africa's Future Hinges On Impact

The question is no longer whether graduates can be produced at institutions, but whether solutions can be delivered at scale.

At the University of Johannesburg (UJ), this shift is grounded in a simple principle from Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Professor Letlhokwa Mpedi: "Excellence and access are not mutually exclusive".

As higher education systems expand, institutions are increasingly required to balance inclusivity with quality, while demonstrating measurable societal value.

UJ's 2026 theme, '21 Years of Impact', signals a broader continental reality, where universities are compelled to move beyond legacy toward accountability, where success is defined by tangible impact.

This shift has been echoed on global platforms. At the Times Higher Education Africa Universities Summit 2026 in Nairobi, Kenya, Mpedi explained that universities must anticipate future needs rather than react to crises. Continued reliance on imported knowledge is no longer sustainable in a competitive global environment.
