Winter pattern: cabbage in demand, but carrots less so

According to Absa AgriBusiness, weather dynamics will continue to have an impact on vegetable producers, particularly as colder temperatures strike.

Weather dynamics will continue to play a significant role in the next few weeks for South Africa's vegetable producers as colder temperatures are expected, especially in winter rainfall regions.

CABBAGES

Average monthly cabbage prices increased significantly by 25,4% (see Graph 1). This comes on the back of very strong consumer demand, expected to last until August.

Average monthly supplies increased by 14,5%.

Annually, average cabbage prices are up by 46,3% (see Graph 2), despite a 109,6% increase in average volumes supplied by mid-June. Analysts expect volume recoveries to last at least until late July.

CARROTS

Average monthly carrot volumes are showing an upward trajectory, rising by 1,9% for the week ending 13 June. This is supported by a 13,1% month-on-month average price decrease observed on markets (see Graph 1).
