UCT professor wins prestigious research award

Dr Katye Altieri has been awarded the prestigious 2025 Oppenheimer Memorial Trust (OMT) New Frontiers Research Award.
Altieri, associate professor of oceanography at the University of Cape Town, set out to determine whether nitrogen from air pollution improves the ocean's ability to absorb greenhouse gases, or whether it actually makes the problem worse.
The award included a five-year, R7,5 million research grant to examine the relationship between the atmosphere, atmospheric pollution and the oceans, which addressed a lack of knowledge of how air pollution impacts climate change.
