Protecting the predators of leaf miner and other pests

This article examines four pests that are a threat to Swiss chard, and how insect predators can be your best allies in the fight against them.

CUTWORM

Although it is not specifically a pest of Swiss chard, the cutworm (Agrotis spp) will feed on almost any crop. It lives just under the soil and is not noticed until considerable damage has already been done. It’s a good idea to spray the entire land with a pyrethroid a day or two before planting. However, you should avoid doing so after planting, as this may kill beneficial insects that can keep pests under control.

Spraying with pyrethroid before planting will also control crickets and millipedes.

HAWAIIAN BEET WEBWORM

This pest, whose scientific name is Spoladea recurvalis, occurs sporadically. Fortunately, there is a highly effective parasitoid wasp that can keep it under control, virtually eliminating the pest at no cost to the farmer. Many farmers, however, spray for
