Onion sowing choices
Farmer's Weekly
|February 28, 2025
Your particular growing conditions will dictate whether you should use seedbeds, direct seeding, or plugs for sowing onions
The success rate of onion seedlings can be improved considerably if you choose the appropriate sowing method.
SEEDBEDS
Sowing into seedbeds is a safe way to control germination and ensure you get the maximum number of seedlings from your seed. You are able to have hands-on control of all factors for safe germination in a range of conditions.
You have a choice of using raised beds, sunken beds for flood irrigation, or simply sowing on flat ground.
You should cover the beds with shade netting over wire hoops to enhance the germination environment and protect the seedlings from heavy rain or hail. The hoops need to be spaced about 1m apart. Ideally, you should use micro-sprinklers to reduce compaction and keep the soil surface moist and well oxygenated.
