More effort needed to protect vulnerable cheetah

On International Cheetah Day, commemorated every year on 4 December, emphasis was placed on the vulnerability of the species.
There are now fewer than 7 000 cheetah left in the world, including small populations in the Middle East and Asia, and they are present in less than 10% of their historic range globally, according to conservation organisation Wild Africa.
Guy Jennings, director of Wild Africa Southern Africa, said in a statement: “As apex predators, cheetahs regulate the food chain and ensure healthy herbivore populations. Protecting cheetahs safeguards these ecosystems.”
