'Leave your footprints on the land'

This year’s Agricultural Writers SA Agriculturalist of the Year, Pieter Bruwer, says he was born with a love of agriculture. Bruwer conducts research on a range of subjects, including tillage, cultivar standability, fertilisation and crop protection. He spoke to Magda du Toit about his current work and the state of agricultural research.

What is important to you as an agriculturist?

The importance of ethical and knowledgeable agronomical services can’t be overemphasised. I’ve gained a great deal of experience in proven practices and principles, but I’ve also tested modern and revolutionary ideas in practice. It’s important to share knowledge with young agronomists, but new ideas and theories should be tested against proven science.

Are there other opportunities that you would like to pursue?

We’ve developed a production programme, named the Langfontein Plan, in which we look at soil management, plant nutrition and responsible crop protection in a holistic manner. We manage the process from soil preparation through to harvesting and would like the opportunity to manage this system on behalf of other progressive farmers in a professional manner.
