June means it's time to vaccinate against African horse sickness

Dr Mac suggests some practical ways for horse owners to pool their resources and make annual vaccination time a trouble-free experience.

Over the past few years there have been unexpected shortages of African horse sickness (AHS) vaccine, so it’s a good idea to purchase it right away while it’s available.

Currently, the only vaccine registered for use against AHS in South Africa is the live attenuated strain, made by Onderstepoort Biological Products. This can be purchased directly from your veterinarian, veterinary wholesalers, or registered agricultural co-ops.

Certified proof of AHS vaccination is required for all horses competing in shows, endurance, or other events.

AHS is a highly dangerous infectious disease. All horse owners and breeders are advised to vaccinate during the time of year when Culicoides midges are no longer flying. By this time, the midges have laid their eggs, which will only hatch once it gets warmer again.

Donkeys and mules also need to be vaccinated, although research has shown that donkeys are not as susceptible to AHS as horses are.
