Flood damage exacerbated by poor infrastructure

Tarien Cooks, disaster management specialist at AfriForum, has expressed serious concern about the lack of damage-control infrastructure and management expertise across South Africa, except in the Western Cape.

Speaking to Farmer's Weekly, she said the latest spate of flood disasters that hit the country over the past few weeks could have been prevented and better managed.

"The large-scale damage caused by, among other [things], the poor management of dams, such as the Vaal and Bloemhof dams, could have been prevented if the correct protocols were applied.
