Airport construction and renovation are rampant in India. Hopefully, passengers will have a world-class infrastructure
-
The Indian government is set to invest over Rs 92,000 crore for a significant transformation in its aviation sector. The investment will go towards the construction of new airports and the expansion of existing ones. This move aims to enhance India’s aviation capacity and infrastructure, making it more competitive on a global scale.
Late last year, the central government announced a comprehensive five-year plan to develop and expand more than 50 airports across smaller cities. This strategic initiative, spearheaded by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), aims to bolster airport infrastructure through various projects set to be undertaken by the central government, state authorities, and private players up to 2030. This ambitious plan comes amid a surge in domestic air travel, with Indian air traffic recently reaching a record high.
Twenty years ago, India had only 50 airports with regularly scheduled service, according to statistics from the Airports Authority of India. The aim is to reach 200 operational airports by 2025, with another 200 airports being added over the course of the next two decades. At present, India has 157 airports. The focus is on creating world-class facilities at the airport to ensure that air travel becomes more accessible to the common man.
