Retrofitting: Not just an afterthought

|August 2022
As we move toward more advanced innovations in our everyday lives, it is important to think of making sustainable alterations to our built environment.
-
It is no surprise that the building construction and operations sector accounts for the largest share of both global final energy use which is 36%, and energyrelated carbon emissions, which are 39%, globally.
Moreover, in the buildings consume up to 70% of the country’s electricity output. As global economies continue to look at ways to reduce their carbon emissions and become sustainable in their energy usage, they scramble to find alternatives and other solutions to tackle the issue.
As the built environment continues to be one of the biggest emitters of Green House Gases (GHGs), it is imperative to see the effects they have in the long run. For example, reports suggest that approximately two-thirds of existing buildings globally will remain operational until 2050.
But technologies change all the time. As we move toward more advanced innovations in our everyday lives, coupled with the need for design and other practical changes in the space we will be in, it is important to think of making sustainable alterations to our built environment.
It is also crucial for governments from across the globe to invest in sustainable solutions to ensure these buildings become energy-efficient and reduce their impact on global carbon emissions.
