Are healthcare facilities leading the way for design that makes a real difference?
-
For centuries, theories about the impact of design and colour on healing have been widely discussed and explored. A recent study by Australia's Victorian government has spotlighted how 'good design' in healthcare facilities isn't just about creating visually pleasing spaces but offers tangible benefits, too. Faster recovery times, improved staff productivity, and even reduced operating costs have been sighted This discourse raises an interesting question: what exactly does 'good design' mean in the context of healthcare? More importantly, are healthcare facilities leading the way with design that makes a real difference?
WHAT IS GOOD DESIGN?
According to industry leaders, good design supports the operational efficiency of a health service. "Designing with healthcare staff in mind who work tirelessly day and night, treating patients is imperative," says Kern Parangan, design director at Spacewell Interiors.
Of course, patients are an essential consideration, too. For Design Matter's design director Fabidha S. Rahman, good design takes into view patients, visitors as well as healthcare staff. "From a patient point of view, key strategic design elements include soothing colours and even artwork, every corner should be well thought out to make sure it eases a patient who is in distress."
