From smart automotive assembly lines in Pune to robotic vaccine packaging at the Serum Institute, the state is rapidly evolving into India’s automation powerhouse. Government support through policies, tech parks, and innovation grants has accelerated adoption, especially among MSMEs. With over 12,000 crore invested in industrial automation in just the past year, Maharashtra is not only keeping pace with global trends—it’s helping define them.
Maharashtra’s Industrial Might and the Shift Toward Industry 5.0
With over 22% of India’s registered factories and contributing nearly 20% to the national manufacturing GDP, Maharashtra has long been India’s industrial powerhouse. But now, the state is transitioning from traditional manufacturing to technology-first production ecosystems. From automotive and pharmaceuticals to electronics and agriculture, robotics and intelligent automation are driving this shift.
According to the Maharashtra State Industrial Cluster Report 2024, the use of industrial robotics or automation has grown significantly, especially in Pune, Aurangabad, and Mumbai. More than a third of large factories in these regions have already adopted some form of automation. Furthermore, the deployment of collaborative robots—or cobots—has increased by over 40% in the past year, signaling a strong move toward human-machine collaboration.
