From Cloud-First to Cloud-Smart: Navigating Systemic Risk in the Industrial Age

In the rapid push toward digital transformation, industries are facing a new paradox: the very cloud technologies that drive innovation are also creating unprecedented systemic vulnerabilities.
-
As organizations consolidate their digital footprints within a few global hyperscalers, the risks of “concentration”— where a single provider’s failure can halt entire global supply chains—have become a critical boardroom concern. In a recent interaction with Rashmi Verma, Anupam Chaturvedi, Head of ZEISS Digital Partners India, discussed how modern leaders must evolve their strategies to protect both enterprise data and physical industrial assets. Chaturvedi highlights the shift from a “Cloud-First” to a “Cloud-Smart” mindset, emphasizing that resilience is no longer about preventing every failure, but about building systems that “bend without breaking.”
From the unique security demands of Operational Technology (OT) to the emerging concept of security as a lifetime product liability, Chaturvedi provides a roadmap for navigating the “blind spots” of high-concentration environments. He argues that the future of industrial security lies in decentralized decision-making, architectural diversity, and a move toward “secure-by-design” principles that protect products for decades, not just until the next patch.
Cloud concentration is increasing across industries. How do you view the systemic risks this creates for manufacturing and critical infrastructure?
At Enterprise level Cloud concentration is advantageous in bringing economies of Scale & Innovation, Speed & Agility, Cost Optimization, until it introduces systemic vulnerabilities and key indicators for those are Single Point of Failure, Regulatory & Compliance Exposure, vendor Lock-in and Market or Geopolitical Risk.

Cascaded ideal diodes: Solving 48V EV power challenges
The increased use of 48V battery subsystems, in addition to conventional 12 V networks, is causing a noticeable change in the design of HEV/EV power systems. 48V delivers more power without the penalty of heavy cabling to reduce the power loss in the wire harness leading to extended drive range.
