HOW IT WORKS WINDLASS MAINTENANCE

A windlass may be electrically or manually operated, and because it sits at the front of the boat, it will be subject to regular dousing with salt water.

If the electric motor is in the chain locker, that too will be in a damp, salt-laden environment. So, although designed for harsh marine conditions, corrosion may be likely. (Strictly speaking, a windlass has a horizontal drum. If the drum is vertical, it should be called a capstan.)

WHEN IT SHOULD BE DONE

It's important that you operate your windlass regularly and hose it down well with fresh water. In any case, you should just exercise it frequently - and it's always a good idea to give it a thorough annual inspection, as detailed in the windlass manufacturer's handbook.
