Almost everything we own and use travels to us by ship. Yachtsmen, crossing the shipping lanes, wonder who is on watch as a VLCC (Very Large Crude Carrier) or ULCS (Ultra Large Container Ship) proceeds in its apparently inexorable way.

The Mission to Seafarers would like us to think more frequently about the 1.89 million seafarers of all nationalities who work on the 74,000-plus merchant ships around the world. Many of them are away from their families for months or years at a time. Their working conditions and security may be handled with callous disregard.
