I've always had a soft spot for Lowestoft. Not only was it the location for the family holidays of my youth, but those childhood memories - a freezing North Sea, onshore winds euphemistically referred to as 'bracing' and escaping the elements for a game of bingo on the pier - come flooding back every time I think of Lowestoft. It was a happy place for me and, I hoped, my return journey there would leave me happy once again - all I had to do was find a decent restaurant for our overnight stay.
