MONTEREY CAR Week in California attracts the world's best cars, the deepest pockets of collectors and record sale prices, with this year's event being no different.

One car that caught everyones eye was Lot S98 at Mecum's auction.

Lot S98 was a Ford Edsel Citation convertible, believed to be one of 930 built in 1958 and one of less than 15 restored.

The price paid was A$265,000 - a record.

It was mid-July 1957 when the Edsel commenced production across the USA, going on sale September 4, 1957 or E-Day, as enthusiasts coined the date. The Edsel was a vast undertaking by Ford, who bet the house on the car. It was offered as senior and junior models with the seniors badged Citation and Corsair, utilising the larger Mercury frame, while junior burgers wore Ranger, Pacer and Bermuda badges. The Villager and Roundup were the station wagons.
