IT WAS described as the most important new Falcon in Australia’s history, and in many respects the XD was that significant.

Code named 'Blackwood;' the new Falcon resembled from some angles the European Granada but in every respect was a product of the Australian driving environment.

The new Falcon looked nothing like the XC it replaced but beneath the new skin significant changes were hard to find. Unchanged were the engines; 3.3 or 4.1-litre, single carburettor sixes or two V8s in 4.9 or 5.8-litre capacities.

Transmission choices stayed the same too, with three speed manual or automatic and four-speed manual in six-cylinder cars, three-speed auto or four-speed manual in the V8s.
