The weather outside Is frightful but the Boxer is still delightful

We've had the first frosts, and the mighty R1250 R is still chez Dowds, amazingly enough. The good guys at BMW had me on their sort of 'reverse-Santa' list, to come and whisk my wheels away just before Xmas. But as I write this, it's still tucked up in my garage - hurray! I've not been using it so much this past month, though. I was away on holiday with the family for a couple of weeks at half-term, and flat-out with work before and after the break.
I also popped up to the Motorcycle Live show at the NEC - but blagged a lift in a mate's car, so eschewed the big Boxer for my Brum jaunt (sitting on a frozen M25/M40 for 90 minutes to Birmingham is crap in a car, but little better on a bike, honestly).

Being cold on a motorcycle isn't just unpleasant, it's potentially dangerous! The human body is designed to maintain a stable internal temperature of around 37°c. When it drops by just a couple of degrees, hypothermia starts to kick in, causing symptoms including shivering, mild confusion, lack of coordination/fumbling hands and drowsiness. None of which help you control a bike. And that's only mild hypothermia!
