Serenity served with a side of wild

Many people believe the best balm for the soul is camping by the water or in the bush. Why not have both at these two campsites in KwaZulu-Natal?

Serenity served with a side of wild

Campsites in KwaZulu-Natal generally fall into two categories: coastal resorts or mountain retreats. Gautengers flock there in summer, but even in winter, you'll find no better climate anywhere in the country. Add the unique charm of the Drakensberg, where you can pitch your tent near the Lesotho border in some of South Africa's most breathtaking landscapes.

imageAnother group of campsites also deserves special mention: those between the Midlands and the eSwatini border. These offer the ultimate relaxation. In the past, we've visited wonderful spots like the hot springs of Natal Spa and Thangami. This time, we're casting our net wider, exploring two delightful campsites we haven't been to before.

The campsite at Bivane Dam near Vryheid and Nyalazi, next to the Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park, differ vastly in character and atmosphere. What they have in common, however, is that we'll definitely return. Bivane Dam's waterside campsite earns praise for its facilities, smooth operation and overall condition. At Nyalazi, you'll be treated to some of the best service in the country while sharing your neighbourhood with the Big Five.

KZN's Mediterranean

A campsite next to the water is almost synonymous with fishing, and Bivane Dam is no exception. But it's not just about angling here. The campsite is well-equipped and offers something for everyone. Not into fishing? Bring your bird book and binoculars, relax in your camping chair by the braai, or invite some fellow campers for an outing.

They don't know what we know

Despite technological advances, and the unrealistic notion held by some that camping is merely a way to show off, the heart of the lifestyle should remain unchanged, says Neels van Heerden.
