MG Group's Super Premium Coach Strategy

|October 2025
The Indian bus and coach industry is no stranger to transformation. Yet, few stories reflect resilience, reinvention, and ambition as clearly as that of MG Group, headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, writes Ashish Bhatia.
Founded by the late Mohan V. Kamat, a first-generation entrepreneur whose journey began with own power transport and evolved into auto component manufacturing before culminating in bus and coach building, MG Group has always stood for perseverance and customer-centricity. His passing in January 2024 left a void, but it also marked a turning point. His son, Anil Mohan Kamat, now CMD, carries forward his father's values while charting a bold new roadmap. "My father built MG Group on perseverance, hard work, and long-standing relationships. He taught me the importance of constantly innovating, being courageous, and striving for excellence even in the minutest details. As we move forward, those values remain our guiding force," says Anil Mohan Kamat, CMD, MG Group.
STEPPING INTO BIG SHOES
Anil Mohan Kamat, who joined the family business in 2009, recalls his initial years working on OEM-centric projects. The early focus was on contract manufacturing for leading commercial vehicle brands. But as OEMS gradually moved towards fully built products, MG Group's business model required rethinking. "While OEM relationships are still important, I felt that for the next generation, it was critical to carve a new path. For me, the gap was clear. We needed to create our own brand, our own products, and be recognised for innovation and design. That entrepreneurial satisfaction became my driving force," explains Anil Mohan Kamat. This led to MG-branded initiatives such as Mammoth, Columbus, Glider, Dreamz and Starz, each adding layers of experience in integrated engineering. These were stepping stones to the company's most ambitious product yet, the TIGRA super premium coach.
