FIRST HRG IS ALMOST FINISHED
Classic & Sports Car
|September 2025
One of Britain's most endearing sports cars is 90 years old in 2025, and its very first prototype is reemerging after a protracted mechanical overhaul. Ted Halford (ex-Vale Motors), Guy Robins (formerly of Trojan) and Ron Godfrey (ex-GN) joined forces to build a sports car, the HRG, in the belief that many manufacturers had sacrificed performance for styling and increased weight.
-

The HRG featured a ladder chassis, a Meadows 4ED engine and light, ash-and-aluminium coachwork. The 1935 prototype was given the chassis number A50 and registered DPA 233. It was used as the works demonstrator, including at Brooklands events, races and Motor Cycling Club trials, as well as being road tested by a number of magazines.

GOODY GUMDROP, OUR OWN AUSTIN
I blame the Gumdrop books by Val Biro (below) – those tales were read to me by my mum when I was a child. They lingered long in the memory, and last year I started a new chapter of my own when I acquired a 1929 Austin 12/4 Burnham, my very own Gumdrop.

Car clubs head west for Haynes celebration
The inaugural John Haynes Classic took over the Haynes Motor Museum in Sparkford, Somerset, on 7 September, coinciding with the venue’s 40th anniversary. The day celebrated the man as much as the cars he loved: John Haynes passed away in February 2019, and one of the sessions on the live stage brought his family and friends together to remember him. Other discussions considered ’80s icons, the future for classic cars and programmes to engage the next generation.
