HOW TO SAVE FUEL
CAR South Africa
|CAR July 2023
Fuel prices have been rising without any sign of significant relief. In times like these, it's helpful to understand how to save fuel, what works and what doesn't
Vehicles that can get by using the least amount fuel as possible have become invaluable sources of mobility, not merely economically, but environmentally as well. Regardless what you drive, it remains how you drive that truly matters, and small changes in your habits behind the wheel can earn you a few more kilometres. Here's how to stretch your fuel budget.
ACCELERATE SMOOTHLY
Your dad was right all along when he said to pretend there's an egg positioned below the accelerator pedal. Gradual acceleration allows the car to maximise building momentum, thereby conserving energy in the process.
DON'T ALWAYS FILL UP
If your day-to-day routine consists of largely stop-start city driving, filling your tank to the brim means that you're lugging around unnecessary weight, which can sometimes be in excess of 30 kg.
If you are often within reach of a fuel station, filling up only halfway, but more frequently, means your car won't need to work as hard to get you around.
BRAKE GENTLY AND EARLY
Braking dissipates your precious fuel as heat energy. Gentle acceleration coupled with gentle braking means your car only uses the most efficient amount of energy to move and stop, thus saving you fuel.

COOL CONCEPTS
Given its overuse in social media by millennials in describing everything from the reaction to a bottle-flip video that could be likened to said teens witnessing an act of witchcraft to a celebrity tripping over a ridiculous garment they wore to some vapid media event, the word ‘iconic’ has lost some of its impact of late.
