Where the River Meets the Road

We journeyed to the foothills of the Himalayas to attend a travelling bikers' meet unlike any other
EARLY EVERY YEAR, WHEN THE AIR BEGINS TO warm up and the hills begin to beckon to you, a few hundred motorcyclists from across the country quietly make their way to a single point on the map. No manufacturer summons them. No ticketing algorithm tracks their numbers. They come because word went out through the usual channels, which is to say through friends, group chats, and the kind of phone calls that end with someone saying they would see you there.
This is Rider Mania, but not the one most people think of first. The gathering that many associate with that name now goes by the name of Motoverse. It grew out of Goa, built its reputation over the years as a beloved end-of-year fixture, and eventually found a home under Royal Enfield's official patronage. That evolution brought scale and production value.
However, the original Rider Mania kept moving, kept its independence, and kept the quality that makes it what it is, which is essentially a motorcycle club event that got too large to contain but never lost the plot. The Brotherhood of Bulleteers Motorcycling Consortium (BOBMC) hosts it, and smaller clubs under its umbrella across India compete each year for the right to bring it to their city.
This year, the community chose Rishikesh, the stomping grounds of host and organising club, Free Soul Riders, and I flew in from Pune at Motul's invitation. They have been part of this event for over a decade, and they had asked me to come along to witness it for myself.
