Once dominated by mechanical gears and metal castings, the landscape of engine components is undergoing a seismic shift.

With the surge of electric vehicles and a software-first approach to mobility, electronics are no longer accessories to the extern auxiliaries to the engine they are the engine's nervous system. This transformation in was spotlighted by Sivakumar Yeddanapudi, Global vice president - Digital Cockpit & Connected service products, Visteon. “Traditional engine components like camshafts, pistons, or manifolds are giving way to intelligent systems capable of interpreting data in real time. What used to be a closed mechanical loop is now a dynamic, learning-driven network,” he averred.

From Machine To Intelligence

At the heart of this transition lies the rise of domain controllers, centralised computing units replacing a multitude of legacy Electronic Control Units (ECUs). These systems integrate powertrain logic with infotainment, ADAS, and thermal management. This consolidation not only streamlines wiring and weight but also enables adaptive behaviours like predictive powertrain mapping or software-based throttle modulation. “We're moving from one ECU per function to consolidated architectures that control multiple vehicle domains,” explained Yeddanapudi during his keynote. He deemed it a necessity for building scalable, efficient, and software-defined vehicles.
