BATTERY SWAP INFRASTRUCTURE IN INDIA
Auto Components India
|January 2025
As India's EV ecosystem evolves, battery swap infrastructure is emerging as a crucial component for efficient and rapid charging, writes Upendra Kasbekar.

As India accelerates its journey towards becoming a global leader in Electric Vehicle (EV) adoption, the need for a robust and scalable infrastructure to support this transition is increasingly evident. Among the various technological solutions being explored to address the challenges of EV infrastructure, battery swapping has emerged as a promising innovation. The current state of battery swapping in India, its potential to revolutionise the EV ecosystem, and the challenges that need to be addressed to make it a mainstream solution are in focus.
► 2023: A base case
India's EV landscape in 2023 was characterised by a steady, albeit slow, expansion of public charging stations. With 2023 as the base, India had approximately 1,800 publicly available EV charging stations, concentrated in major cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. However, this network still fell short of meeting the needs of the rapidly growing EV fleet. According to a report by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), a target of 1.32 million charging stations by 2030 was set, indicating that the country would need to install over 400,000 chargers annually to meet this ambitious goal. While charging infrastructure was expanding, challenges such as under utilisation of stations, slow charging times, and the lack of standardisation in plugs were creating significant barriers to widespread EV adoption. Range anxiety, long charging times, and the absence of charging facilities in rural areas further compounded these issues.
