The Country Smallholder
|Spring 2025
We've asked experts to share their knowledge with us on keeping alpacas, their handling and their fleeces.
-
The world of alpacas is a lifetime of learning especially as caring for them is improved by understanding their luxurious fleeces and the fibre that comes from them. Breeders and services are always keen to share their knowledge and a range of course from the British Alpaca Society plus talks and events at their regional events will fascinate and inspire you. Why not start by going to the BAS National Show, 21st to 23rd March where you'll meet the UK's finest fleeces and top quality alpacas and have the chance to 'talk alpaca' to the exhibitors and stallholders?
Entering the exciting world of alpacas
CHARLOTTE BROCKWELL OF CADBURY ALPACAS WELCOMES THE BAS TRUSTED ALPACA SELLER SCHEME AND LOOKS AT LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Alpacas can provide a wonderful lifestyle and is an exciting emerging farming enterprise in the UK, with financial returns from fibre production and breeding, as well as their calm nature being ideal for agri-tourism and therapy. One of the most important considerations when buying alpacas is who you are buying them from. It is not always economically viable to go for the cheapest alpacas if they end up needing extra care and veterinary expenses because they are obtained from an unscrupulous or novice breeder, not to mention the potential heartache.
