Do chickens dream? Surprising science says they do!

Although I have touched briefly on the subject of dreaming in chickens in a past article on roosting, I thought it would be interesting to delve a bit deeper into whether chickens do actually dream or not, and explore the scientific evidence to support, or refute this notion.

It has been estimated that chickens spend up to 30% of their day snoozing. But what happens during this time? Do they simply rest their eyes, or do they enter a state of consciousness similar to human dreaming?

Chickens' sleep patterns differ from humans, in several ways. While humans experience different stages of sleep, including REM (Rapid Eye Movement), and non-REM sleep, chickens have a unique sleep-wake cycle. They take short naps throughout the day, with periods of deep sleep at night. Research suggests that chickens' brain waves during sleep are similar to those of humans, with slow-wave activity indicating deep sleep. But does this mean they're dreaming?

The science of dreaming is complex, and researchers still debate whether animals dream at all. In humans, dreaming occurs during REM sleep, when brain activity is similar to being awake. Studies suggest that dreaming serves purposes like memory consolidation, problem-solving, and emotional regulation. But what about chickens? Do they have the neural machinery necessary for dreaming? And if so, what might they be dreaming about?
