Magic of the festive ride

A CHRISTMAS ride is more than just a wintry hack with a string of tinsel in the mane. It's a chance to celebrate the joy of horses, spend time with friends, and raise funds for good causes. In towns and villages across the UK, many of these much-loved events get the festive season up and running, bringing smiles wherever they go.

These rides can take many forms – from carriage teams in London's Royal Parks to community hacks raising money for local charities. They're festive, fun and heartwarming – whether to watch or experience firsthand – warming the cockles of horse lovers with a dash of Christmas spirit.

THE CHRISTMAS GIANTS OF HOLLY LODGE

IN the heart of Richmond Park in southwest London, a team of 10 Shire horses is keeping centuries of heritage alive, while winning new admirers in the process.

Part of Operation Centaur, an organisation promoting the role of the horse in urban settings, the Shires are best known for their conservation work in the Royal Parks. Through the spring and summer months, they can be found mowing grass verges, rolling bracken and maintaining wildflower meadows.

However, between early December and the New Year, they offer horse-drawn carriage rides through Richmond Park, giving the public a unique experience that has proved a sellout success.

Professor Andreas Liefooghe, who heads up Operation Centaur, explains: “It's an opportunity to explore the park and see wildlife including red and fallow deer, herons, swans, even kingfishers.

“It's a bit like going on a British safari – you never quite know what you're going to see.”
