The whole world saw a video that went totally viral. The sweetest, most endearing one possible. Of a cat and an Imam in a mosque in Algeria.

To explain, an Imam is one who leads congregational namaz (prayers) in a mosque. This incident took place during the night prayers, Taraweeh, which happens in the holy month of Ramzan. The Imam was reciting on the mike with hundreds of Muslims behind him praying, following his recitation, when suddenly the Imam, who had his eyes closed, felt a soft thud on his left hand folded across his chest. Instinctively, without opening his eyes or breaking his Quranic intonation, he reached out to protect the cat which had suddenly jumped on him.

Even as the Imam continued with the prayers, within seconds, this sweet, but bold little kitty found its way up the Imam’s shoulder from where it turned around to nuzzle him, even reaching out to plant a precious kiss on his face. No sooner did the cat realise the Imam was about to go in ruku (bending forward from the waist), it jumped off.

All this took place in barely 30 seconds.

Some images capture world attention. This was one of them. The government of Algeria even awarded the Imam for his presence of mind in commemorating the Islamic image of sympathy and compassion towards animals.

A powerful message beamed out, which hopefully will work towards helping millions of animals which face cruelty of various kinds on a daily basis.
