More optimism for the future of riding schools
Horse & Hound
|December 07, 2023
Demand is high and action is being taken to reduce issues with workforce across the country
THERE is growing optimism for riding schools as ideas to support and promote them have been – and continue to be – put in place.
School owners joined British Horse Society (BHS) CEO James Hick and others for a round-table discussion at Talland School of Equitation on 20 November, after the BHS coaches’ convention.
Mr Hick told H&H the soldout convention was a “great day”. But he wanted to stress the work on riding schools.
He cited BHS data showing 250 schools have closed since 2018 (news, 9 March).
“There are many reasons, but the threat that runs through all schools is lack of qualified staff,” he said. “That means they can’t be as productive as they want; most have 30% less headcount than they’d like, and 50 people on the waiting list.”
Mr Hick said the cost of living is a big issue and business rates is “one of the big ones”. Action taken by the BHS includes setting up a team to support schools, which can give legal advice and signpost to funding or support.
