Three gorgeous Kiwi women share their brushes with deadly cervical cancer
There are a few things Mai FM presenter K’Lee, blogger Kylie Haack and salon queen Ashley Allen have in common. Not only are they devoted partners and mums, but the trio have also all had their own cervical cancer scares while they were busy having babies. Speaking to Woman’s Day, they explain how this deadly disease can arise at any age.
KYLIE HAACK, 35, BLOGGER
Kylie received the shock of her life when she was pulled into a doctor’s office and told she had the early signs of cervical cancer. She was just 31 and her little girl Casey was only a year old. “Being told at my age I might have cancer was an emotional journey,” says Kylie, who blogged openly about her traumatic experience. “Thankfully it was quite quickly downgraded and I had successful surgery three months later, which got rid of all the abnormal cells.”
The business owner and part-time PA admits she was a year overdue for her smear, confessing, “It would’ve been due around the time Casey was born. I got caught up in motherhood, as you do, and put it on the backburner.”
Looking back, Kylie – who’d never had an abnormal smear before – says her periods were irregular, but she put it down to the effects of childbirth.
“As soon as I heard the C word, I didn’t really take anything else in. It was a pretty scary time.”
