Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition where your body makes too much skin, leading to scaly red patches that are often more obvious on your elbows and knees.

“It can arise at any age and can be associated with arthritis and metabolic syndrome (an increased risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease),” says Dr. Michael Rich from Enrich Clinic in Melbourne.

WHAT TO DO

Treatment options include light therapy (UVB) and prescribed medications, including biologics, which help regulate your immune system.

Eczema

Eczema is a non-contagious, inflammatory skin condition.

“Eczema can come on at any age and makes the skin dry, red and itchy,” explains Dr. Rich.

“The itch leads to scratching, which can become habitual so it’s very important to get your eczema under control before an ongoing scratch cycle sets in.”
