Let's go FORAGING!
WOMAN'S WEEKLY
|October 13, 2020
Delicious berries, fruit and nuts abound in our countryside right now – and they’re all free!
Autumn is when our hedgerows and fields are filled with nature’s goodness. And foraging for it is a win-win situation. What could be better than free food and fresh air? Just remember to leave enough for wildlife, and to ask permission if the land is privately owned (foraging is legal in public spaces). And, of course, always be sure you can identify a food before eating it. Here are some of our favourite pickings.
Rosehips
Way higher in vitamin C than oranges, rosehips were used during the war to prevent scurvy. The bright red and orange berries appear on field and dog roses. Their sweet flavour is delicious in syrups, jelly and tea. Make sure to remove the seeds and hairs before using.

Rowan berries
Like sloes, the small bright berries of the rowan (or mountain ash) are inedible uncooked. Use them to make a delicious jelly.
