At Taronga Zoo, beside Sydney Harbour, Christmas is celebrated by creatures great and small. Bronwyn Phillips spends a very special day with the animals and meets the keepers who make their lives richer and more rewarding.

Like many of us at this time of year, Michelle Shaw has been baking. But this wasn’t a traditional Christmas cake. “It was for Esmerelda, a 104-year old tortoise,” Taronga Zoo’s animal nutritionist laughs. “We’re putting the final decorations on it tomorrow.”
