Having grown up in a small coastal town, I developed, early on, an enduring passion for classic coin-ops. Twenty pence brought you bright, loud, color-drenched escape from the cold wet winters, an escape that was impossible to discover on the eight-bit micros and consoles of that time, making the lure of the coin-op even greater: it was the only place where you could experience arcade perfection. Fast forward 30 years and we carry hardware in our pockets that developers of the time could only dream of. Thus, the launch of the SEGA Forever series of classic games for iOS from the arcade giants was a source of massive excitement. Combine this with SEGA’s fantastic, arcade-perfect conversion of Crazy Taxi on iOS and my expectations were massively high, maybe too high? So far, the SEGA Forever series has been based around their Mega Drive/Genesis arcade ports and original titles, a decision, one can only assume, that was made to enable the development team to use the same emulation software that is used in their licensed Mega Drive/Genesis mini consoles, however, this means those expecting to bring the SEGA arcade experience to their iOS devices will be slightly underwhelmed.
