Tactical change yields stives beast for luke stevenson

- Paul Monkman

Chunk Of Change!

The simple tactical change of switching over from a pop-up to a bottom bait was enough to bring Luke Stevenson’s campaign on St Ives Shallow Pit to a euphoric end with the capture of the lake’s colossal mirror Colin at 51¼lb (above).

The 34-year-old automatic door fitter from Colchester, Essex, had been going about his business quietly on the challenging Cambridgeshire syndicate, tripping up many of the lake’s larger residents. After bagging the Sheffield Linear, the only A-Team fish other than Colin to have evaded him, a few weeks ago, he knew he was close. Then on the second morning of his latest two-day session Luke received the bite he’d been waiting for when his bottom bait was snaffled by the Shallow Pit’s largest inhabitant.

West Counties Report

Around the venues If I told you in Staffordshire there is a fishery with pools within which the average carp is currently over 30lb, you’d be interested, wouldn’t you? What if I told you it’s not a syndicate or a club venue, but is available for all to fish on a day-ticket basis? Still interested? Then check out Baden hall Fishery, where the Quarry is starting to wake up and big fish are on the move.

Mask The Smell

His latest session on Bluebell Kingfisher Lake, Northamptonshire, saw Terry Fitzgerald make it five forties in five trips with this 43¼lb common (below). Richworth S-core boilies produced the goods for Terry, who fished on a clear area where he baited with five kilos of low-oil pellets and free offerings. The hookbait was offered on a rig including an Avid Carp Drop-OffInline lead coated with clay to “mask any smell from human fingers”.
