Belgian Greg Van Avermaet (CCC Team) may need to play a more canny backseat role if he is to finally stand on the top step of the Tour of Flanders podium this Sunday.

Van Avermaet’s previous efforts in the race have either been dogged by bad luck — he crashed in 2017 due to a fan’s jacket — or suffocated by the almighty home team Deceuninck-Quick Step. However, the hour appears to be near for the Olympic gold medallist.
