Fifty-Year-Old Record Smashed

Beryl Burton’s 12-hour record finally falls.

It was her first attempt at riding a 12-hour event and she didn’t decide until three weeks beforehand that she would even take part — but that didn’t stop Alice Lethbridge putting in a ride that looked to have broken Beryl Burton’s 50-year old competition record at the National Championships on Sunday.

Official results had not been released as CW went to print, but the 32-year-old Drag2zero rider from Epsom covered 286 miles according to her Garmin, beating Burton’s 1967 total by nearly nine miles.

Time checks taken by her support team around the course also showed she had passed Burton’s old record of 277.25 miles with 20 minutes left in the saddle.
