the 572km race once offered cycling’s most gruelling spectacle
By May 1965 Jacques Anquetil was nearer to the end than the beginning of his illustrious career but despite winning the Tour five times he had failed to capture French hearts. Anquetil, portrayed as cold and calculating, was booed when he won. He wanted to turn those jeers into cheers.
