Milborne Port, Somerset, England UK. 18:24pm. 28 October 2011. David Noton talks to us today, not to simply reminisce, but to remind us that you can find pleasure in your old work

I must admit I’m struggling for words this month. As I write this a quarter of the world’s population is on lockdown. Our world has been turned upside down by the Coronavirus pandemic. Hopefully, by the time you're reading this, the situation will be improving, or at least past its worst, but few outside the White House are predicting that. So with our health in peril, movements limited and livelihoods tenuous, writing about how a picture was taken seems somewhat glib. What’s important now is staying healthy, fed and solvent; my photography, apart maybe from the odd macro picture of spring buds in the garden, seems irrelevant, and pointless even.
Or maybe not. Surely now we need positivity, more then ever, and few experiences in my life have been more uplifting than standing on a hilltop at dawn watching the light paint a misty landscape. Okay, our movements are restricted and that’s not a responsible option, but this will pass. And these weeks, maybe months, of confinement represent an opportunity to sort and savour our back catalogues.

Whether you want to capture a painting like the above, digitise old prints or reproduce any kind of canvas, there's real skill in capturing artwork with your camera. Not only do you need the colours to be accurate, you also need to master the spread, angle and quality of the light to minimise glare and show the work at its best. This painting by the artist Bryan Hanlon has a wonderfully subtle colour palette. To reproduce the painting in print and digital form, it needs to be captured in the right way.
