Gran flies out to help refugees fleeing war

Qualified nurse whose relative survived Auschwitz says she feels ‘compelled’ to act

A GRANDMOTHER is flying out to Poland to help Ukrainian refugees fleeing their war-torn homeland.

Wanda Warrington, known as Wendy, planned to set out for the city of Przemysl - a short distance from the Polish Ukrainian border - today.

The qualified nurse and midwife, from Tottington, Bury, says she felt ‘compelled’ to help Ukrainians who had been displaced as a result of Russia’s invasion of their country.

Wendy, 55, has been given three weeks’ leave from her role in the NHS and is using her own money to fund her trip to eastern Europe.

“I just want to go and do my bit,” she explained.
