THE National League’s match of the day ended in stalemate at a packed Racecourse yesterday as heavyweights Wrexham and Tranmere Rovers fought out a thriller.

The Welsh side’s biggest crowd of the season were on the edge of their seats for much of the afternoon as the action swung from end to end, before the final outcome that saw both managers question some of referee Andrew Miller’s decisions.

The home side suffered an early blow when injured full-back James Jennings was replaced after only four minutes, the introduction from the bench of new Wrexham signing David Raven prompting a switch of formation from 4-4-2 to three at the back.

Whether or not that unsettled the Dragons, it was perhaps significant that Rovers almost immediately stole the lead – Steve McNulty’s header from a corner seized upon by Ritchie Sutton to break the deadlock.
