CELTS HAVE EDGE WITH WEDGBURY

HE’S building a brighter future off the pitch, but new Stalybridge Celtic midfielder Sam Wedgbury is just as hungry for success on it.

- John Lyons

CELTS HAVE EDGE WITH WEDGBURY

The 32-year-old has packed plenty into his playing career over the last decade and a half, representing the likes of Macclesfield, Forest Green and Wrexham.

But when he left Chesterfield at the end of last season, he decided it was the right time to leave the pro game behind. He joined NPL Premier Buxton and went into a building business partnership with his dad, Martyn.

“I had a bit of interest from full-time teams, but I wanted to make the transition sooner rather than later,” he told The NLP. “I’ve joined forces with my dad and I’m learning every day.

“Financially, I don’t rely on football now. The building money pays the bills and the football money is a bonus. I think I’ve made the transition at the right time.”

And it means he hasn’t got to worry about where his next contract is coming from.
