A SET-PIECE effort from Josh Umerah just after half-time was enough for National League leaders Torquay United to avoid the banana skin of Southern League Chesham and squeeze into the last 32.

The Step 3 Generals made a game of it and came close to equalising late on, but the Gulls defence stayed solid and dealt with everything that the home side threw at them.

Sadly, the game was played behind closed doors and lacked atmosphere as a result, although a few Chesham fans managed to see some of the action by standing on a bank to peer over the wall at the Meadow end of the ground.

The most dramatic event of the first half came in the opening ten seconds when Umerah found some space inside the Chesham half and fired in a shot that keeper Sam Beasant saved with his legs.
